FIVE DAYS TO FRIDAY
After a successful preview preceding the pandemic in Washington, DC, and in response to the pandemic and the heightened challenges faced by health providers, the creative team adapted the original play to a live streaming presentation on Zoom. Using the elements of the virtual medium (virtual backgrounds, music, etc.), actors perform in real-time from their various locations.
FIVE DAYS TO FRIDAY uses the power of theater and dance to unpack the unseen stressors (gender bias and expectations, mental health stigma, toxic/ unsupportive work environments) that all-too-often threaten the health and well- being of health care professionals. Developed by a team of professional artists, this multimedia, theatrical work presents the ways that individual and system stressors can foster burnout. The story follows a prominent general surgeon and chief resident as they attempt to navigate a week of familiar challenges related to their professional and personal life. Characters include physician partners, spouses, and family. A talk-back will take place following the 45-minute production that explores the themes addressed in the play in addition to resources and strategies focused on building a healthier culture of medicine.
The New Theater of Medicine, a partnership between a professional theater artist and a physician, creates theatrical plays about aspects of medicine that are enacted by professional actors. The work has traveled the country, including internationally in support of CDC programming in Prague, Hong Kong, and elsewhere.
